From the mouth of babes: #usBlogs #UsGuys Week 3

#usblogs: Week 3 Theme: “Building Your Offline Klout”

This is too easy peeps. In the words of Denzel Washington from the movie Philadelphia:

Now, explain it to me like I’m a four-year-old. Joe Miller

So, have you noticed @Josepf has not been around much the past month? Maybe not, I try to keep a touch on all of my virtual friends. However, have IRL’ing it away on several fronts (#usguys see here) and there is one simple key.

Be present.

Can I explain this using Buddhist precepts? Yes! How about Organization Effectiveness psycho-babble? Sure! Or wait, my all time favorite (Think the movie: How to lose a guy in 10 days) “Couples therapy” and “active listening”.

Instead, let me tell it to you like the 3 year old told it to me!

So, watching a Disney Movie this morning while Lina’s mom was out running errands. Just happened the have my iPad with Tweetdeck sitting on my lap. Lina says “Are you watching that or watching the movie?” I said “I’m not really watching that, I’m watching the movie…” To which the 3 year old said “Well you can only watch one, which one are you watching“.  I flipped the case over and put it down…

Got it? My girls, Arielle, Olivia-Jane, and Madeline hate it when we’re out somewhere and Dad’s texting, tweeting, or is in any other way distracted or not present.  You know if your present, they know if your present.  The one and only way to build IRL Klout is to be present.  In case you’re still not sure what this looks like?  Click read more to see, click through the picture for a larger size if it helps…

Thanks Lina for the reminders. And Diana for the photos. And for the rest of you who had to look? :-) Go find a 3 year old. Tell them a made up out of your own head story. Or at least the Three bears. Get their attention, practice being present.

I am in such solid agreement with Lina! Tonight my pseudo-husband, who is always putting down people who use cell phones on the road, used his cell phone on the road.

I was aghast at his perception of things being different if it were HIM doing it; obviously he’d only do it if it were IMPORTANT! Well, hell! Everybody thinks their things are important.

I’ve been appalled and discouraged by the attention paid to devices and gadgets while with those we care about, or those we don’t see often, or anywhere, actually. How could they possibly matter more than the people in our real worlds?

Love this post, Joseph, and I love your girls and Lina for clarifying it for you. If ever I get “that way,” I want a painful and resounding kick in the ass. But I don’t think I’ll need it. :)

Great reminder, Josepf! Sometimes we need to be brought back to reality, simplify, and remember basic human interaction! It’s too easy these days to virtualize (is that a word???) ourselves and forget the living, breathing people sitting next to us.

meeting folks for the first time—maybe the easiest most effective way to screw it up is to forget their name. i’m a good name guy, after working hard at it. many times i’d get the name and like a man jumping from rooftop to rooftop, sometimes their name would hit my mind, struggle on the edge and fall, to be forgotten.

i think its what you’re talking about here: being present. I always have an endless to-do list. before walking into a meeting or a busy room, i have to consciously remind myself: this is what I am doing right now. and make the switch, like flipping the cover over the i-pad.

that and not letting go of the person’s hand until i am sure i know their name.
